Four researchers from the LIVES Centre will present the first results of the Wellways Project at the major annual international conference of the Population Association of America, May 5-8, 2021. They study how events and transitions in family and employment significantly influence health and well-being.
In three presentation sessions, Chiara Ludovica Comolli, Danilo Bolano, Laura Bernardi and Marieke Voorpostel present the first results of the Wellways project, focusing first on critical events, which are real turning points in a life course and disrupt the sense of well-being. The researchers observed that the rapid succession of numerous critical events has a negative impact on the feeling of satisfaction. The concentration of these events over a short period of time thus influences well-being. These results are based on 20 waves of data from the Swiss Household Panel (SHP) between 1999 and 2018.
Laura Bernardi and Danilo Bolano will also discuss the dependence between the domains of work and family, which argues for social policies that take into account spillover effects. Their results show that becoming a grandparent favours early retirement for both men and women. However, the two genders are not affected in the same way.
The Population Association of America’s annual meeting is the premier conference of demographers and social and health scientists from the United States and abroad. Here demographers at all career stages are afforded the opportunity to present their research in oral and poster sessions, hear others’ findings, and network with their peers.
